THE HEAT IS ON
As temperatures continue to rise across the UK, so the issues associated with vehicle overheating spike dramatically. A well-known driving association states ‘cars are 50% more likely to overheat in hot weather’.
The impact of engine overheating should be at the forefront of every driver’s mind - considering the direct and knock-on effects. Sometimes, it only takes one severe instance of overheating to permanently damage an engine.
Generally, serious issues occur at high speed; however, idling in stop-and-go traffic – especially during the summer months, will also contribute to overheating.
Key reasons why vehicles overheat?
Insufficient coolant levels
If drivers don’t keep an eye on their vehicle’s coolant levels (especially during summer) they could be in a lot of trouble. Coolant helps keep engines cool. It circulates through the cooling system, absorbing excess heat from the engine, getting cooled down in the radiator, and repeating the cycle again. If the coolant is too low, trouble won’t be far away!
Low motor oil
As well as lubricating moving parts, motor oil is present to take away excess heat from the engine. Vehicles tend to burn more oil in the summer months, so it is especially important to make sure oil levels stay topped up.
Vehicle thermostat
If a thermostat is damaged or faulty, it will no longer be able to perform its function of regulating the amount of coolant flowing through the engine.
Overuse of air conditioning
If air conditioning is kept running for too long, especially on long journeys, it can cause an engine to go into overdrive and contribute to overheating.
Cooling fan
A faulty radiator cooling fan is a common cause of engine overheating. It stands to reason that if the fan is not running effectively, or sometimes not even at all – then an engine will struggle to handle the heat.
For businesses, it is not only the direct costs of repairing damaged engines that needs to be considered. Daily business activities such as delivery, client visits and passenger transportation could all be compromised if unplanned maintenance is required.
