WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DRIVE WITH LOW COOLANT?
Antifreeze ensures your car runs and stays and stays at optimal temperature. Driving with low coolant could let your engine get too hot and could seriously damage your engine.
Here are some things that can happen if you drive with low coolant:
- Rising temperature gauge
- Your engine could overheat and seize
- You could blow a head gasket
- Damage the engine block
- Your car could shut down
- Your car heater does not work
- Fluctuating temperature gauge
If you notice any of the above, or a low engine coolant warning light appears on the dashboard, it is definitely time to stop driving your vehicle, ensure the engine has cooled down and check the coolant level.
If your coolant is low (below or near the lower mark), top it up using either a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze (for normal driving conditions), or pour pre-mixed antifreeze straight into the reservoir. Note: Please check your car handbook and only use clean tap water in an emergency, but antifreeze should be added as soon as is possible and if in doubt please contact a garage or a trained mechanic.
